Careers Beyond the Ordinary
How to turn the skills you have, into the career and lifestyle you want
What:
Mindful Living and Wellbeing: fighting the mental health epidemic
Unsure or stressed about what to do with your life? Worried by COVID’s impact on your immediate career prospects? Concerned by the wellbeing of those around you, but not sure how to help?
We live in an increasingly emotionally disconnected and anxious world. Rates of depression, anxiety, and suicide have been on the rise in the UK, USA, and western world generally for the last few decades, and they have unfortunately become an epidemic, one that some experts fear is being forgotten during the COVID pandemic. According to a January 2020 UK House of Commons Briefing Paper, “1 in 6 UK adults have experienced a ‘common mental disorder’ like depression or anxiety in the past week”, while the charity Mind‘s statistics show “1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem of some kind each year in England”.
But it doesn’t have to be like this. Many wonderful people are working hard to combat this epidemic, to reduce stigma around seeking help for mental healthcare, and to increase people’s connectedness and mindfulness. In China, Gotoco and Edu-venture’s teams have been awed by the brilliant work of Enoch Li, who founded Bearapy, and globally we keep a close eye on work arising out of the WHO’s mental health action plan.
Whether you want to build a career helping everyone increase their mental and spiritual wellbeing or want to find ways to keep yourself mentally healthy in your career, join us this week for a discussion on how we can all contribute to a better, more connected, healthier world (and how this could go a long way to addressing some of our world’s most pressing environmental challenges as well!).
On Wednesday 22 July 2020, we are welcoming two inspiring individuals and wellness professionals, Andy Hix and Laura Reeves, to talk with us about how they’ve managed stress within their own careers, and how they’ve built their own businesses and practices to help others tackle their anxieties and lead more connected lives. All of us here at Edu-venture find their stories extremely motivating and thought-provoking, and can’t wait to share them with you!
With Isla Lamparelli, Exeter Uni student and Edu-venture Exeter founder, our speakers, Andy and Laura, will discuss:
- How they became passionate about mental and spiritual care
- How they made their interests central to their careers and made their work more than just a job
- How they built up the necessary skills and network to achieve their goals and help others
- How they grew their own startups, projects, and practices
- Stories of friends and acquaintances who followed similar routes to differing end goals
- Their tips for how you can stay mentally healthy as you launch your career
